For the exhibition REPLAY, artist Nikolaas Demoen (°1965, Ghent) invites 14 graphic designers to design a “post-facto” poster with images from his exhibitions, book presentations and residencies of the past 7 years in museums and exhibition spaces like S.M.A.K. (Ghent), Mu.ZEE (Ostend), Loods 12 (Wetteren), Be-Part (Waregem) and Netwerk (Aalst). By exhibiting these posters, past, volatile events are put in replay, and moreover, the artistic autonomy of a printed poster is highlighted. The exhibition poster showed a peak in the 1960s and 1970s and was then also collected as a full-fledged art object.

The posters in REPLAY are designed by both established and a few young emerging designers, active within the world of contemporary art in Belgium. As a result, the exhibition can also be read as a snapshot of contemporary graphic design in Flanders. The participating designers are: Kim Beirnaert, Michaël Bussaer, Casier/Fieuws, Lisa De Brouwere, Luc Derycke, Jan & Randoald, Inge Ketelers, Joris Kritis, Gestalte, Julie Peeters, Ruttens-Wille, Pauline Scharmann, Stien Stessens and Roger Willems.

On the occasion of this exhibition Convent organises, in collaboration with KASK-lectures, a panel discussion about ‘the poster as artwork’ on May 17 2018. Voor de tentoonstelling REPLAY nodigt kunstenaar Nikolaas Demoen (°1965, Gent) 14 grafische ontwerpers uit om een “post-facto” affiche te ontwerpen met beelden van zijn tentoonstellingen, boekvoorstellingen en residenties die in de loop van de laatste 7 jaren hebben plaatsgevonden in musea en tentoonstellingsruimtes zoals S.M.A.K. (Gent), Mu.ZEE (Oostende), Loods 12 (Wetteren), Be-Part (Waregem) en Netwerk (Aalst). Door deze affiches tentoon te stellen worden voorbije, vluchtige gebeurtenissen in replay gezet, en wordt bovendien de artistieke autonomie van een gedrukte affiche nadrukkelijk belicht. Zo kende de tentoonstellingsaffiche onder meer in de jaren 1960 en 1970 een hoogtepunt en werd deze toen ook als volwaardig kunstobject verzameld.

De affiches in REPLAY worden vormgegeven door zowel gevestigde als enkele jonge opkomende vormgevers, actief binnen de wereld van de actuele kunst in België. Daardoor kan de tentoonstelling eveneens gelezen worden als een momentopname van hedendaags grafisch ontwerp in Vlaanderen. De deelnemende vormgevers zijn: Kim Beirnaert, Michaël Bussaer, Casier/Fieuws, Lisa De Brouwere, Luc Derycke, Jan & Randoald, Inge Ketelers, Joris Kritis, Gestalte, Julie Peeters, Ruttens-Wille, Pauline Scharmann, Stien Stessens en Roger Willems.

Naar aanleiding van deze tentoonstelling organiseert Convent in samenwerking met KASKlezingen op 17 mei 2018 een panelgesprek met als thema ‘de affiche als kunstwerk’. Het gesprek is gratis bij te wonen en start om 20u in Cirque (Campus Bijloke).
