What if architecture could be discovered rather than designed? This exhibition documents August Grootveld’s ad-hoc search for structure; a daily, intuitive process guided by the act of making. The need to make a gate, something to pass through; a platform, something to climb.

The method is just as direct: stacking bricks without a plan, finding what works moment by moment. If a structure falls, it’s broken. Tomorrow, something new begins. Here, construction is a ritual freed from formal intent or convention. The only rules are the physical limitations of the materials and the unwavering commitment to start anew. The forms that emerge are not born from a preconceived vision but from unconscious choices, a spontaneous dialogue between hand and material that intuitively seeks balance, enclosure, or height. This search might yield a large window to look through, high up, not because it was designed, but because it was found. It is both a search for control and a testament to what is possible when we simply go without.

The resulting structures are the unmediated artifacts of this continuous exploration. They are not finished products but fleeting monuments to a daily pursuit of possibility. This is an architecture found through doing, a practice where the act of stacking one brick upon another is not a means to an end, but the entire point. It is a testament to what is possible when the builder’s ego is set aside in favor of play and repetition, an architecture that simply becomes.

Wat als architectuur ontdekt kon worden in plaats van ontworpen? Deze tentoonstelling documenteert August Grootvelds ad-hoc zoektocht naar structuur; een dagelijks, intuïtief proces geleid door de daad van het maken. De behoefte om een poort te maken, iets om doorheen te gaan; een platform, iets om op te klimmen.

De methode is even direct: stenen stapelen zonder plan, vinden wat werkt van moment tot moment. Als een structuur valt, is het kapot. Morgen begint er iets nieuws. Hier is constructie een ritueel bevrijd van formele intentie of conventie. De enige regels zijn de fysieke beperkingen van de materialen en de onwankelbare toewijding om opnieuw te beginnen. De vormen die tevoorschijn komen zijn niet geboren uit een vooropgezet plan, maar uit onbewuste keuzes, een spontane dialoog tussen hand en materiaal die intuïtief zoekt naar balans, omsluiting of hoogte. Deze zoektocht kan resulteren in een groot raam om doorheen te kijken, hoog, niet omdat het ontworpen was, maar omdat het gevonden werd. Het is zowel een streven naar controle als een getuigenis van wat mogelijk is wanneer we gewoonweg zonder verder gaan.

De resulterende structuren zijn de onbemiddelde artefacten van deze continue verkenning. Ze zijn geen afgewerkte producten, maar vluchtige monumenten voor een dagelijkse nastreving van mogelijkheden. Dit is een architectuur die door doen gevonden wordt, een praktijk waarbij het stapelen van de ene baksteen op de andere niet een middel tot een doel is, maar het hele punt. Het is een getuigenis van wat mogelijk is wanneer het ego van de bouwer opzij wordt gezet ten gunste van spel en herhaling, een architectuur die eenvoudigweg wordt.
